Sunday
(I) Genesis
With exultant exhalation
God pressed closed the motel door
Seeming most sacred
Ruined and worn as it was
She made for the bed
Casting off her tattered sneakers
Where she may trip on them later
God put the pager on the nightstand and
In the distance
Thought she could hear church bells
and hymns
Bystander to their transit
toward a place much further
than light could take them
And so she fell
Away onto the mattress
As they went up
And up
And up
And up
And up
And up
And up
Until she lost them
far above the clouds
(II) Exodus
The Sun shone radiance on her face
Settling in the vales and trailing
her expression
Bringing rainbows to hang
Light
and lofty
On her eyelashes
Like cradles in treetops
And God heard only the blowing wind
The of
breath prayer
Making some secret chord
To lull
by
And God let rest those weighty cradles
And so
With exultant exhalation
they
fell
And the dazzling lights in her eyes
Gave way
To a dreamless
colorless
sleep
Leaving only hollow bellows of
Turmoil in the air
And a crescendo
of rain.
Rain.
This first poem I have ever written on my own accord. Actually started writing it in 2014 and would pick it up here and there. Didn't originally have all of the funky formatting free verse stuff, but for whatever reason I felt the need to add that in. All feedback is welcome, thanks for your time!
