  1. Well beaten. SA could have scored many more, their forwards just looked better players than we had. Our defence was extremely shaky and open. Slow paced game in the heat looked to expose the boys.

  2. Terrible qualification system. Qatar edge past an easy group and play Thailand to get qualification. We have South Korea in the group and have to face the Saudis.

  3. Compare this squad to last time we qualified and took a defence of Chapman and Good who were established seniors. Also featured Irvine, Taggart, De Silva, Maclaren, Brillante, Izzo. There's a couple of stand outs in this one, and I suppose one game away from qualification is something, but man it's hard to look at the state of the youth and the results they get.

4.. Some of the best players on the team saw barely any game time for some unknown reason. Najjarine, Pierias and Theoharous to name a few.

Defence looked pretty shaky, consistently caught on the counter.

Delianov was insane, did his best to keep us in it.

Folami reminds me of Arzani, lots of talent, a bit selfish, definitely one to watch

Some incredibly bizarre team selections. Najjarine, Iredale, Pieras (sp?) on the bench, Folami at left wing and Atkinson playing centre midfield? No Theo the entire tournament?

Also, number 20 (the right back) had an absolute shocking game.

Folami looked like the only bloke with any talent out there, but I think he got frustrated because he told the other forwards to get fucked after they missed a sitter.

Hopefully this is the last group of players caught between the gap of the old and new systems. The Joeys recent world cup qualification is a sign that things are improving but more needs to be done to improve our youth system.

As much as I'd like to believe this, the new system will never replace the old NSL based youth system. We are still relying on State league clubs and old NSL clubs youth system to provide players, however they no longer get rewarded as they did in NSL days, giving them no incentive to develop players nor the money for training and facilities to develop more players. Also these new restrictions at state level, where only 1 youth team is allowed at each age bracket is not allowing the bigger state league clubs to form more teams to allow more players to play under their umbrella and use their facilities and coaches... Not sure why the idea of this is to be honest.

Agreed, though we'll have to do quite a lot of improving to match the investment of some of the rich asian nations, as well as overcome some of their inherent advantages (e.g. how these youth tournaments happen at the end of most AFC club seasons but right as ours begins)

Unfortunately, u/rsmhfc is right. The A League clubs are sucking up the $$$, but give very few fucks about youth development. The Roar only started their youth development last year, and it's pretty half-arsed.

It's no coincidence that we've gone from Asian Confederation heavyweights to mid-pack strugglers. The problem is the baseline player our system is producing is technically poor while the Asian countries are improving.

If your hope is the Joeys, read the match report from their last game (against Japan).
