Retirement Blues

When I was just a little girl,
I used to dance with flowers.
We'd sway among the gentle breezes
Blowing through the bowers.

I knew the songs of all the birds
We'd chirp the days away.
And when the dusk began to fall
The crickets joined our play.

Our music could be heard for miles
As croaking frogs joined in.
The racket was quite lively
We made a raucous din.

I built bug castles in the dirt
and dug their streets by hand.
I carved a moat around their home
To help protect their land.

But life went on and years passed by
My childhood days were through.
I gained the title of "adult".
And that is when I knew.

That years and years of labor now
were piled upon my plate.
But still the child's alive inside
Just waiting for that date.

When I will dance with flowers
And will croak with frogs again.
And chirp along with crickets
As the daylight starts to end.

And build a castle fortress
for the pill bugs in the dirt.
I only hope I still recall
the language of the birds.
