Recording guitar (and bass) - Newbie

Been playing for some years and finally have some of my own songs i would like to record, nothing fancy or great just to have some demos of songs. While I have recorded as part of a band before, other than playing (and being recorded) I didn't really get involved.

What's the simplest way to record (other than recording through mic). I have a guitar, amp, Irig 2, laptop, headphones (good quality) and speakers.

Is there a recording guide for idiots as I just don't understand the links I find when googling?
