Although Barony of Barovia rolls off the tongue easily, it is probably a County or an Earldom, Strahd von Zarovich being a Count and all that.

What's funny is that I made him a Baron in my campaign, under the belief that a vampire being a Count was a bit too on the nose (Vallakovich and Krezkov became Lords).
If only I had this before I started, it would've been perfect.
Why is Strahd merely a count when he's the son of a king and has no living brother?
Could be that the House of Zarovich are hereditary Counts, with estates that include Barovia, but the Monarchy their house had sworn fealty to was an elective one. Strahd being cut off from the rest of the aristocracy, he doesn't want to arrogate the power of the King without being elected by his peers in the due process, thus only holding the ancestral title of Count.
According to I, Strahd, he chose the title of count to honor his father's memory. But 2E canon was inconsistent on whether Barov was a king or a count.
Do you think Barovians really care?
I'm going to use this for my upcoming campaign (when the players get the map from Ezmeralda's Wagon)! Too lazy to draw one myself and I couldn't do any better!
great map! really like the aestetic of this!
i just started DM'ing for a group where none of us have played DnD previously. is it generally a good idea to provide maps such as these for the players when the campaign starts or should they only learn of the new land throughout gameplay?
The rule of thumb is: think about their character knowledge. Do they have a reason to know it?
In this case, if they are adventurers brought to Barovia by the Mist, they don't know the map at all. They can certainly get in possession of one ( a map of Barovia is in Ezmeralda's wagon, but you could also let them buy one in Vallaki, if they ask for it).
This is cool! I wish I had this to give to my players before giving them access to the color one.
This looks great! It's great to give player handouts that look like they originate from the world itself. Just one thought, Tsolenka Pass is at a considerable elevation, but here it seems to be right by the river. Just a thought, since I had to reiterate this strongly to my players who were looking at the official map.
I love it, this is perfect for a handout. Thanks OP.
The cat is a nice touch.
This is fantastic!
This is pretty goddamn awesome.
My favorite part of this is easily the map scale. “0——————really long hike” lol
