Sonnet to The War to End All Wars
When love of country is too much to bear,
And hating others is the tendency,
Then war will come to populations tear,
Where none will grant some form of clemency.
Your horses gave their last rides on green plains,
Their trenches dug were filled with mustard gas,
The war transformed with advent of airplanes,
Through tanks and cars your soldiers broke like glass.
Millennial empires all but disappeared,
And in their place came socialist regimes,
Still in the West ‘twas more war that they feared;
Through Nations’ Leagues they sought themselves redeem.
Despite deterrent come from blood and tears,
What came was armistice for twenty years.
