Compatibility with Bose QC35 II

I'm thinking of getting an S9 and compatibility with my headphones is really important to me. Not working properly is a dealbreaker, since I love these headphones. My Moto G5 Plus can do multiple hours of continuous playing with a small glitch once every 45 minutes or so, which is completely fine by me. If anyone has tried this setup, and can share their experience, I'd love to hear it. Of course, Bose support forums are full of issues, but no one goes there to post about how everything works as expected.

I bought a pair of QC35 II for a flight to Korea. Used them the entire flight (14 hours) between bluetooth (most of the time) and plugged in to the airplane to hear the video on the back of the seat. Never got below 50% (after 14 hours) battery which was impressive.

I was very, very impressed with them. The only issue I noticed is once in a while (maybe every 30 minutes), it would cut out for 1 second. Not a big deal IMO.

Yeah, I'm getting short cuts outs, either it's Bose's fault, or every device out there is using the same bluetooth chip. It looks like a packet just gets dropped every once in a while, both on my phone and on my macbook. Not a big deal. Thanks for the info.

Can you clarify, you were using the headphones with the phone for most of the flight, right?

Correct. I was using the headphones with the phone listening to music via bluetooth the majority of the flight. Then a few hours plugged in to the airplane so I could hear what was on the screen in front of me (35mm plug).

Ok, thanks. I actually can't do that, my pair has the somewhat frequent issue of extreme noise over wired audio. It's not something I really need, so changing them was too much of a hassle.

A bit late I know, but can you use the NC while being plugged to the in-flight entertainment (movies)?

Yes

I use these headphones with my S9 everyday at work, using them for youtube, spotify, audiobooks and podcast and have never had an issue. Usually put them onto charge every few days while I am at lunch.

Never really had any issues, they were slighty out of sync once, but a phone restart fixed that.

My experience is nearly identical to yours.

I recently went the other way and bought the Bose QC35II after ensuring that they'd be compatible with my s9; they worked perfectly out of the box, though I will strongly recommend going into the developer settings and setting the Bluetooth audio codec to AAC for the sake of (slightly) better quality. Never had any issues with skips or anything with my phone, though I interestingly enough sometimes get the issues when connected to my Windows laptop.

Didn't know you could tweak those settings, thanks for the tip! Was that all you changed?

1
DoctorNoonienSoong•

Yep pretty much! These headphones don't yet support anything more advanced in terms of other settings (nor do most, from what I understand)

Bose headphones are really lacking in the customisation and the "smart" department, when compared to Sony or B&W. Hope they catch up.

a glitch every 45min?

S9+ and sony mdr1000xm2 , never had a glitch unless i walk a long distance from my phone.

Yeah, seems like Bose should be avoided for Bluetooth is what I'm getting out of this. My Sennheisers don't ever cut out like that.

My "cheap" JBL sports never even did that.

My Samsung iconx can be a little glitch if I have the phone in my pocket facing the wrong way.

Thank god they came with the Phone as a promo.

I hear that a lot about almost every "true wireless" headphones tho. The only ones that don't are the AirPods when mixed with the iPhone.

It's a flagship device. I have a Sony h.ear on wireless headphones and they work perfectly. Dolby atmos even improves the sound a little bit. I have no doubt they'll work.

I have another questions regarding Sony mdr 1000 - can you switch Bluetooth codec to LDAC?

I had the original 1000x and now have the 1000xm3. Can confirm, when connected, you have a LDAC toggle in the Bluetooth settings. https://i.imgur.com/wgoh2ws.jpg

All Android phones (at least flagships anyway) using Oreo can use LDAC.

I use these for several hours a day at work. Unless I go roaming while leaving my phone at my desk I rarely get any hiccups with the connection, and when it does happen I'm not sure it's Spotify or Bluetooth. Paired just fine with Bose connect.

However, I've only used them for audio and phone calls, I haven't tried setting a voice assistant.

Works with my s9+

Have used the QC35's with S8/9+ for awhile. No issues until recently when I connected both phones at the same time. After that got the periodic audio hiccup in audio on S9+. Downloaded firmware update to QC35 and that fixed the problem.

Are your QC 35 up to date with the software through the app?

1
SuperRandomExplosionOP•

Yeah, I'm on 3.1.8. Got exited for the update too. Inside was Alexa. At least I can meme now.

I own both the Sony 1000xm2 and the Bose QC 35-II. Both of them have NO issue what so ever with my S9, both can use Google assistant which is pretty amazing. What's more, since Android has full support for pretty much all Bluetooth codecs, you get the best sound quality with anything: with Bose it automatically uses AAC (just like iPhone would), and with the Sony's it automatically uses LDAC (just like Sony smartphone would).

(Also IMO the Sony's sound better, but the Bose are lighter... Overall, both are amazing)

SuperRandomExplosionOP•

I tried both xm2 and xm3 on and simply found Bose much more comfortable. The slight difference in sound quality is irrelevant when I can put my headphones on and forget about them. With Sony, the inside of the headphones, the "grill" I guess lightly presses against my ear, which is uncomfortable. The inside of the Bose headphones are shaped like my ears, so there's no contact.

They're better on the sales part too. My local tech store had stands for both, but with the Bose stand I could pair them with my phone and try out my own music. With Sony, I could try out the 3 rnb tracks they had going. I don't listed to rnb, so it's not a relevant test for me.

Both are so close in sound quality, build quality, and comfort that I think it's completely a personal preference. I prefer the Sony's, but understand if you prefer the Bose!

I had Bose QC 35's and I now have Sony WH1000XM3's. The Bose were very nice, but believe me when I tell you that the new Sonys are on another level. Sound production, noise cancelling, and battery life are all way better.

I'm pretty sure gen one and two are basically the same, but gen 2 has Alexa/Google, I have the first gen and they work amazing, there's a small delay, but that's it.
