The Sphinx said to the sand
"What say you if I hold your head in my hands?"

The sand said, with a glance

"Then that is circumstance"

So the Sphinx said to the land
"If i am the levies, how heavy my hand?"

And the land said, in a trance

"Everything is chance"

So the Sphinx said (and he said this to man)

"If God were a watch,
would he lend me his hand?"
