Back from Japan. Best vacation in years - got to see Ghibli museum and visited places where some off Ghiblis movies have their inspiration from. A person I talked to even told me a few details about the new upcomming movie (release 2020) I was not aware off - cant wait.

Was it the movie Miyazaki has been working on? I heard he wanted to make it in time for the Olympics but looks like it won't be in time.

Yes it was. Its for his grandson. Its based on an 80 year old japanese book about a boy going to school. I even got a title for the movie but cant for the life of me remember what it was. I was told the reason for Miyazaki is yet again going into movie making was sadness of 2 great friends dying lately. It made him think of his own death coming nearer and he decided he had one last movie left in him.

Awwwww

Is he really abusive to his workers? :(

I hope not! The japanese have a different sett of work ethics than a lot of other countries have, they work long hours.

So jealous you got to go to the Ghibli museum! I was abroad in a different country when I could have gotten tickets so I couldn't have them sent to my home in the US, and I didn't realize they were super difficult to get once in Japan. Next time!

Also, the JR Pass is soooo nice to have as a tourist there.

I used the JR pass all the time, really a must have when travelling around like I did.

I don't see a single package of kit kats! The wife and I came back with something like 10 different varieties.

Awww, this reminds me of when I went to Japan. My haul looked like yours when I came back lol. The museum was super cute wasn't it?

Yes really really loved it. So many little details to look at. All those stained windows I want them in my house now 😊

where did you visit?

2
NorwegianpixieOP•

The house from Totoro, Totoro forest, the cafe in Tokyo and the museum ofc. The movie there was an absolute highlight for me so beautifull.

I also went to Edo Tokyo Open Air Architectural museum. A lot of the buildings from Spirited Away are inspired from there. I recognized many details used in the movie. Miyazaki often went there as its close to the Ghibli studio.

That little green larva you see in my haul Miyazaki designed for the Architectural museum I bought it there.

Edit - forgot The Ghibli clock in Tokyo.

Oh wow: this place looks great. Thanks for mentioning it!

We went to the Hida Folk Village a few years ago, which is a similar setup but focused on Edo Period homes. Would be really interesting to compare a much more diverse set of architectural styles from different parts of Japan and different periods.

I am interested in doing a Ghibli sightseeing trip. Are there places you would have gone if you had more time? Anything you wouldn't recommend?

Nope was easy to get just visit any Ghibli shop in Japan. I think I was in like 4 shops besides the one in the museum, they all had it. There is a little pink one in the museum that you can only get there.
