31 Days of Vince Russo "Special Matches" in 1999/2000 WCW - #4: Tag Team Ladder Match (Rey Mysterio, Jr/Konnan vs Disqo/Alex Wright) from the October 2, 2000 edition of WCW Monday Nitro
The fourth entry is the Tag Team Ladder Match from the October 2, 2000 episode of WCW Monday Nitro. The match features Rey Mysterio, Jr and Konnan from the Filthy Animals taking on the Boogie Knights (Disqo and Alex Wright).
Here is a link to the Tag Team Ladder Match. It's also on the [WWE Network] (http://network.wwe.com/video/v841122883/?start=108)
This is a tag team ladder match, and the rules are actually what you would expect. The first tag team to climb the ladder and retrieve the object hanging down from the ceiling wins the match.
But what is the object the tag teams are fighting over?
Is it the WCW World Tag Team Title belts? No.
Is it a contract for a future WCW World Tag Team Title match? No.
So what is this precious object hanging from the ceiling of the Cow Palace in San Francisco that these two teams are fighting over?
It’s a plastic duck.
Before I get into the match itself, here’s some much needed context:
On the 9/18/2000 episode of Nitro, Disqo meets with WCW Commissioner Ernest Miller in Miller’s office. Disqo’s “visual aid”, a white plastic duck named “Disqo Duck”, is introduced. Disqo complains about the way Ernest is doing his job, so Ernest Miller proposes a one-on-one match with Disqo later in the show. If DIsqo wins, DIsqo is the Commissioner for a day. If Disqo loses, Rey Mysterio, Jr and Juventud Guerrera (Disqo’s stablemates in the Filthy Animals) are stripped of the WCW Tag Team Titles. DIsqo accepts the match…without consulting with the rest of the Filthy Animals first.
Disqo loses to Ernest Miller…in thirteen seconds. Rey and Juvi are stripped of the Tag Team Titles. Disqo is out of the Filthy Animals.
On the 9/27/2000 episode of Thunder, Disqo faced Konnan (also with the Filthy Animals) in a singles match. Alex Wright helps Disqo win the match, and the two reunite.
Backstage a little bit later, Scott Steiner finds the Disqo Duck and beats the duck with a lead pipe. It has nothing to do with this match, but I must mention it. This was supposed to be serious, but it’s awesome unintentional comedy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4_qmZPdZcI).
Somehow, the Filthy Animals kidnap the Disqo Duck and hold it hostage until the start of the October 2, 2000 episode of Nitro.
Now, onto the match itself.
Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr, and Tigress of the Filthy Animals walk down to the ring with a ladder and a big brown sack to start this episode of Nitro. Tigress looks great in her outfit. Rey Mysterio Jr has little devil horns glued to his forehead. Konnan is dressed like a cow.
Konnan and Tigress pull the Disqo Duck out of the big brown sack. Konnan then cuts a promo on Disqo, including a reference to Disqo committing inanimate bestiality with the Disqo Duck.
Disqo Duck (who is blindfolded with electrical tape, cause why not) is then hung from the ceiling. Alex Wright and Disqo come to the ring as The Boogie Knights.
The match lasts four and a half minutes with Konnan pulling down the duck for the Filthy Animals win. Tony Schiavone then says Disqo will have to try to get his duck back another time. Five seconds later, Alex Wright hits Konnan with a chair, and Disqo grabs the duck that Konnan dropped on the ground. The Boogie Knights beat up Rey and Konnan some more before they leave the ring with the duck. As far as I know, the duck is never seen again.
The booking and buildup to the match was stupid. The match itself was fairly short on time. The purpose of the ladder match (grabbing DIsqo Duck) was asinine. The aftermath rendered the match meaningless. That all said, I actually enjoyed the in-ring work. I loved seeing Rey Mysterio Jr doing his fast-paced high-flying offense here. Alex Wright was also pretty good while Konnan and Disqo were passable.
The in-ring action by the four wrestlers (Rey Mysterio Jr in particular) was good. Everything else was crap.
Some items of note in this match:
-
WCW had a crowd of around 10,000 fans at the Cow Palace in February 2000 to see their Superbrawl PPV. On this episode of Nitro less than eight months later, WCW drew 2,666 fans.
-
This was the opening match on this Nitro. The main event was the infamous San Francisco 49er Match for the WCW World Title between Booker T and Jeff Jarrett, which I promise will be on this list.
