[Discussion] Sonar/Cakewalk (Windows DAW bought and killed by Gibson) has been resurrected by Bandlab

DISCUSSION

Apparently Bandlab bought Cakewalk and now you can download Sonar Platinum for free. Gibson bought it and killed it last year. Kind of disappointing if you're a musician who prefers Windows to Mac. But now Bandlab apparently has made Sonar Platinum free (minus the Melodyne plugin). Anybody have any experience with Bandlab? They make their own mobile interfaces. My cursory reading on the subject implies you can record on mobile and tablet with their interfaces and edit using their chrome-browser based software AND you can import your tracks into Sonar if you want to edit on Desktop.

Welcome to last years news.

Yeah, that's why I chose discussion as the tag and not news. It's news to me. I have Sonar Producer and was wondering if it was worthwhile installing Sonar Platinum.

it's free dude, just try it.

FilthyTerribleOP•

Yeah I will, but I've got a limited amount of room on my solid state drive and I've already got one version of Sonar running, I suspect they'll share some plugin folders and I don't want to mess those folders up. And I wouldn't know which plugins came with it, because I've already installed a host of VST plugins and Melodyne and the like.

well if you can't fit a daw then you've got another problem, clean up that SSD as having them full or near full degrades performance and lifespan.

hey, downvote me, whatever, but at least do a bit of learning.

The Daw wars are over and cakewalk was a casualty. Mac people are better off with garage band. PC people are better off with reaper.

The daw wars? Never heard of that. Also, if there ever is a war it's only getting started because Pro Tools has started to lose it's basically monopoly position.

Pro tools has the monopoly in the pro market. But almost no hobbyists use it. Expensive, proprietary stuff. Sux at midi.

In the last 15 years market leaders have emergence in the prosumer and enthusiast market - but cakewalk got left behind. It was already an afterthought when Gibson bought it.

Is Reaper free?

Studio One Prime is free.

Reaper is great for the price, but it doesn't compete with the big boys if you need that kind of power.

StudioOne is probably the big boy on the block now, particularly when paired with it's hardware systems. $$$ though.

FilthyTerribleOP•

Well Sonar does everything that Pro Tools and Cubase do. What's power mean in this context?

See my other response to your question.

Who are these big boys that reaper doesn't compete with?

I am not a reaper user myself (logic) but that is a pretty ridiculous assertion.

I'm interested in that answer too. In my experience, a DAW is a DAW. Some of them bundle in more virtual instruments and drum machines. Sonar introduced me to Melodyne and gave me Session Drummer. But the core functionality seems pretty standard and VST plugins work on all of them. EDIT: Oh with the exception of Audacity - no virtual instrument support there, and no midi, but quite a competent multi-track program nonetheless for wav recording.

most ignorant thing I've read on here in awhile, and I'm on here a lot.

why bother with studio one prime when you can use reaper without limitations for free?

1
HisHolyNoodliness•

Speaking of ignorance, try some reading comprehension.

Reaper does not compete with the flagship version of StudioOne, if you need that kind of power.

Let alone the hardware side of things. PreSonus makes amazing integrated hardware that works seemlessly with it's software. Reaper simply does not do that stuff.

For 60 days, yes. Even after that it just gives you a nag screen.

Super enthusiastic community too.

Minorpentatonicgod•

my trial is currently on 312 days of use for v5, maybe I'll buy it one day. I own 4.0 but waiting on some improvements before buying another license.

FilthyTerribleOP•

After that, how much for all the bells and whistles? I've got Session Drummer III, about a hundred virtual kits, and the Melodyne plugin that lets me tweak vocal mistakes.

So just a nag screen? Nothing gets disabled? Do they hold back the dumkit sounds and stuff and make you pay for those? Where's the revenue stream?

1
Minorpentatonicgod•

reaper doesn't really have any instruments, it has all the fx you'll ever need aside from say, reverb, but you'd have to load up the instruments you already own or hunt some new ones.

They make $60 of of some percentage of their user base - then $60 again if the do a major upgrade. They don't lock anything down. They don't have an analogue to the Logic Drummer (then again, who does?). I think mist people use addictive/superior drummer. Hey do have pitch correction and other stuff.

Logic and Garageband are the only DAW's I know of that are not available for windows, so I don't know why windows vs. mac is in any way relevant to the thread...

It's also missing all the Bluetube plugins.
