Might be getting a pee test at the doctors. If they found weed would they tell my mom?

UNANSWERED

I’m going to the doctors this week to get my heart checked. I’ve been having weird episodes of having a fast heart beat and the doc thinks it might be a combo of the Adderall and supplements I’m taking (5-htp and stuff). Will they do a test on me? And I know docs are supposed to keep stuff confidential, but if I don’t tell him not to tell my mom she will find out since she’s going to the appointment. Thanks!

THC is something that has to be specifically tested for and is not included in most doctor urinalysis tests. They are most likely just testing to make sure you have healthy levels of protein and glucose and to make sure there is no blood or bacteria. This will confirm or deny healthy kidney function.

You should be honest with your doctor about your cannabis use as it can have interactions with other prescribed medications and can play a part in other health issues. Your doctor is not required to tell your parents anything regarding drug or alcohol use, sexual activity, or mental health. Unless they view you as a potential threat to yourself or others.

Doctor patient confidentiality laws are a little different for minors but still there for the most part. If you are old enough to be seen by yourself, then you are old enough to take part in the decision making process.

This is especially important since u/CosmicGlass is going to the doctor about their heart rate. Cannabis is a vasodilator. The vasodilation causes a drop in blood pressure, which the body compensates for by raising your heart rate - as much as 20-50 BPM after initially smoking, but then it returns to normal shortly thereafter.

I know I should tell him but I can’t risk my parents finding out :(

Rereading the reason you are going, you should DEFINITELY tell the doc. As the user above you stated, cannabis is a vasodilator and causes increased heart rate. Personally my heart rate will jump about 30 BPMs for ~45 min after smoking, more or less depending on the strain. If that is combining with the other meds you are taking it could really cause some harm.

You can’t smoke weed if you’re dead. Make health your top priority. Weed isn’t going anywhere and if you keep yourself healthy you will have ample time to enjoy the green goddess later in life.

Ok I will tell him. Btw I only get high late at night after the Adderall has worn off, so I’m being somewhat safe.

You should rethink your priorities. If your having heart issues then being honest with your doctor is more important than your parents finding out. This is extremely important information to your doctor. Seriously, if you’re not going to be honest with your doctor there is little reason to go because they will be working off incomplete information.
If it’s that big a deal if your parents find out maybe you should rethink smoking pot until you’re out of their house.

You could always try calling the doctors office and asking if they test for THC before you go and if they will provide those results to the parent of a minor.

I think it’s unrelated to weed now. I’ve had a sinus infection for about 6 days, and I just read that it can randomly make your heart rate increase super fast, which is what has been happening. I’m still going to the doctor and admitting the weed use, but I’m almost positive it’s the infection after reading a bunch

i don’t think they will unless it attributes to what’s causing it

They won't even test for it. Blood tests aren't a comprehensive thing, like you stick some blood in a fancy machine and it lists everything in it.

They only see what they actually look for deliberately, so unless you're there to be tested for weed they won't test you for weed.

I’m not sure if it varies but I’m pretty sure if you’re a minor they will tell your mother. You don’t technically have patient-doctor confidentiality until you’re a legal adult, 18.

But I mean, I went to the doctor for something similar (high blood pressure), they did a pee test on me and blood work but they didn’t look for drugs, just checked my sugar levels and shit.

I wouldn't be surprised if they blamed the weed. I've seen doctors go in that direction if they know about it. My wife had a negative reaction to coming off a prescription drug and it was a known side effect but they blamed weed once they heard she did it medically.

And if this happens please express to your mother that you want to go to another doctor. Honestly, if your primary care provider says this, go straight to a cardiologist.

Lmao. Are you 16 yet? Cause at that age you are guaranteed confidentiality (at least in most states, I think) but if you're not, they can tell her if they think it's in your best interest.

Yeah I’m 16. Idk what the law is in MN, but I have already been to the doctor a few times and my mom has been with me every time.

Not sure but if ur under 18 then they have to tell ur parents whats going on. U could talk to him and let him know. Just be honest with the dr i suppose
