Practice drills to train/re-train my left hand.

New-to-jazz, self-taught, life-long, 33 year-old piano player here. I've trying to learn to get my left hand in shape for jazz. But these voicings, even just taking out the roots and play 3rds and 7ths, have been surprisingly difficult for my brain and fingers. I play by ear mostly, but can read lead sheets. Historically, I just play block chords or make up my own voicings. Rarely inversions. I always think of the root first and build up.

What are some drills or practices for really beating my left hand into submission? I don't want to learn song after song, as I'm doing now, just tip-toeing through training my left handed fingers, I want to punish and brutalize my left hand until it can really flow around the piano, in the way that it can currently flow around if I'm just using basic major, minor block chords.

I am indeed loving playing with these sounds though!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!
