Leaving the church

Honest question Why does everyone need to go through this weird complicated process of lawyers to leave the church? Can't you just do something to get you excommunicated? I'm honestly not sure about all the things you can do to have that happen, but there are so many arbitrary rules I'm sure you could do something that is actually quite normal
