/u/ZarahCobalt on What is your response to the argument that conservatives are pro-birth not pro-life.
"Anti-killing" is probably the best way to put it. We're trying to stop people from killing other people. When we're losing nearly a million children to homicide (in the non-technical sense) every year, that's a more critical problem than some schools having better teachers or one kid eating cereal in the morning while another one gets a wholesome home-cooked balanced breakfast. We have to prioritize, and most of that isn't the government's place anyway, it's the community's. It is in the government's interest to deter homicide.
The compromise I'm willing to make is fine, we'll make birth control cheaper and easier to get, maybe even some types offered at no charge, if elective abortion is heavily restricted or better yet banned. Because that's the entire point - fewer deaths. We shouldn't let ourselves be blackmailed into supporting strangers' lifestyles indefinitely under threat that they'll kill their children if we don't.
The best social safety net is a thriving economy where jobs are available to any able-bodied person willing to work. (Along with a culture that encourages marriage and family.) Government programs are weak and not enough to help most get out of poverty, have very limited eligibility, or are completely unsustainable. They're not the answer.
