Will I be able to determine if headphones are mine by getting my phone close enough?

Someone at the gym stole my Bluetooth headphones. If I spot someone using the same ones and stand close enough with my phone, will they sync up? Or is there a way for the thief to reset the headphones so they won't pair up with old connections?
