External Display Issues

Looking for some help as it seems all threads online about this are outdated (seemed like a common issue in High Sierra) and most were never solved anyway.

I’ve been using an external display (an old Dell monitor to be exact) without issue for almost a year now with my 2017 MacBook Air running Mojave. I’m using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. About a week ago, my Mac started not recognizing the external monitor after I would leave it sleeping while I was at work all day. It was frustrating, but a restart would always fix it. Now, restarting is not fixing it. I’ve already done an SMC and NVRAM reset as well as reinstalled DisplayLink Drivers, nothing’s worked. The Mac reacts to the adaptor being plugged in, as it lags for about 30 seconds immediately following every time I reconnect it, but it shows no record of the monitor being connected anywhere. The monitor, which is set to autodetect, stays asleep unless I unplug the HDMI from the adaptor, which is normal.

This is extremely frustrating and I’d be very thankful for any insight. Thanks!
