Why are conservatives blindly pro-business?
It seems to me that no matter what the issue at hand is, the conservative solution is always just "free-market". Health care, "free market." Poverty, "free market." Net Neutrality, "free market." Education, "free market." Environment, "free market."
No matter what the issue is conservatives always want to defer to the free market without acknowledging the problems that the free market causes, in many cases the free market is the cause of our societal issues. For example, where net neutrality is concerned we have a case where the entire broadband industry is controlled by a handful of companies all of whom have a non-compete agreement with each other. And with the rollback of net neutrality protections, broadband companies are now able to legally charge customers more for an inferior service. And since broadband options are limited in most areas, customers don't have an option of changing providers.
Furthermore, we live in a society where our politicians are controlled by wealthy corporate backers who get them to write laws that are in their favor which further restricts the market from acting in a truly free manner. This is a problem that the free market created, not the government.
The truth is, a free market only works when it is competitive. But we live in an economy that is becoming increasingly less competitive. Companies are merging and acquiring each other left and right, what this leaves us with is a handful of wealthy corporations in every industry that has no incentive to actually keep prices low and deliver quality.
I'm not saying that the free market is completely bad, I acknowledge that it does good on occasion. But what I don't understand is why conservatives are blindly pro-business. Why is it that conservatives are convinced that capitalism is perfect despite repeat evidence to the contrary? Why is it that conservatives blame the government for corruption without pointing a finger to the corporate money that corrupts them? Why is it so hard for conservatives to recognize that we need laws in place to keep consumers safe from corrupt corporate practices?
