Citizen using police for harassment

Last year an acquaintance of mine got into an argument. I called him and we exchanged insults. I thought that was the end of that, but an hour later the police show up at my door. I willfully give them my cell phone, and they tell me that it's best to cease contact with the individual. They then left.

The next night THREE police officers (all with their own cruisers) arrive at my house. Keep in mind that I have no criminal record, I'm 5'4 tall, and weigh 120 lbs. Apparently the quote unquote "victim" in this case (who is 6'2 male and nearly 200 lbs) spent his entire day in court so he could speak to a judge. Now I had thought this would only place a peace bond on me, but to my surprise I was taken to jail that night and had to go to a bail hearing. The excessiveness of this overwhelms me. I had to miss a day of work and I had no phone to inform them of my absence.

Since this night, I frequently get visits from police late at night. They tell me that I've breached my bail conditions by contacting him again. These times, I actually did not call the individual. He is only seeking to make my life as hell as possible. The police are extremely rude when they converse with me even though I have done nothing. It doesn't make sense to me that you can be accused of a crime when there is absolutely no evidence except word of mouth by someone who clearly hates me. I offered my phone records, yet they were not interested.

Is there anything I can do? I feel like now that I have a criminal history and he does not the police will take his side every time. One time he even called me during the peace bond and I called the police. The police came to my house FIRST instead of his and began grilling me about lying. Essentially this individual can get away with anything he wants and I don't know what to do. Also, I'm fearful as the police seem to see me as an enemy. I doubt they will respond to my calls when I'm really in danger.

I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering quitting my job, moving away from this county, and getting as far away from this individual as possible. By the way, the individual is a male. He is over 6 feet tall and 200 lbs. He knows I possess no threat to him. The peace bond is simply to make my life difficult. Yes, a male is carrying out a peace bond another male his same age...which I find quite pathetic, especially since I did nothing but insult him on the phone.

I also want to add that I could not afford an attorney to fight this case. Where I live legal aid is only given to those facing jail time. My only option was duty counsel. Duty counsel will not fight your case in court. They simply meet with the prosecutor and come to an agreement. It's unnerving to be punished when you didn't break the law.
