Every trick in the oil change book and a creep too
So this happened a few months ago but I went in to get my oil changed again today and had a very pleasant experience that kinda reminded me of just how AWFUL my last oil change was. Sorry for length.
I know oil change places are notoriously scammy, so I'm usually careful. But that day the one I like is booked up and I really want to just get this done so I go to GENERIC LUBE. I walk in, ask for a basic oil change. Specify DIRECTLY I don't want anything else checked or done. Immediately turn down the upsell on oil type and hope that'll be it.
Nope. Not five minutes later an employee comes out with a filter and some tray. Guy is maybe my age, talks to me like I'm an idiot.
Employee: Miss, you really need your engine air filter replaced. shows me a dirty filter, god knows from where
Me: It was replaced recently actually.
E: Are you sure? We can do it now for ($whatever ridiculous amount). It's dangerous.
Me: Yes. I can take care of it at home.
Then he shows me a little tray with colors like this
E: This is the color your transmission fluid should be, and this is the sample we just took. It needs to be changed.
I don't know a ton about cars, but my family was in the tire business a long time before I was born and my mom and brother are both pretty knowledgeable. I know this is utter bullshit. Also I literally just got my car inspected.
Me, losing my patience: No thanks. Is my oil change done yet? That's all I want.
Finally get him to back off. Maybe 10-15 minutes later I have to go pay in the garage for some reason. That's when the worst bit starts. The one guy's manager is out there. He's about old enough to be my dad and he's just disgusting. Asking me totally inappropriate comments and verbally harassing his employee. The asshole asks me if I'm single "for his employee"?!?! And keeps asking more weird personal questions. What do I do with my free time, why am I single weird shit like that, then joking about my (non) answers. Laughing at me and his employee. I'm kind of stuck there while I pay and I'm rude/stand-offish back but there's not much else I can do.
Honestly I'm pretty thick-skinned but I was half in tears by the time I drove off. I felt cornered and harassed. Ended up having my brother double check they'd even changed my oil.
Also I'm in my early 20s and was dressed pretty young that day because 100F heat, what if I'd been underage? It was just a horrific experience. The place I prefer has an office dog, coffee and doesn't even upsell.
TLDR; Oil place tries to scam me then borderline sexually harasses me.
