[GEAR] Are modern Gibson SGs very different electronically from those from the 1960s, or is it just the sort of people who play them now that make them sound “heavier”?
I have a Fender Telecaster and several acoustic guitars and I want a guitar with humbuckers for a fuller sound. I am from Brazil and I do not play heavy music, this will sound weird but my style is a mixture of 1950s American rock and roll, jazz, samba, bossa nova, fado and traditional music, like I will play samba rhythms and cadences but with some jazz blue notes and switching through the modes of the key with a flat pick and my amplifier turned up until it starts to sound some fuzz.
I originally wanted a Les Paul but when I went to try one I hated how heavy it was, I would have to always sit down to play. Then I thought about the SG, it is a good looking guitar (especially if it was painted not red) with humbuckers and it is much lighter than the Les Paul. However I have not been able to play one as the store does not have them. In the 1960s it seems that the SG was used for diverse music that was not so heavy, but afterwards I mostly associate it with a very heavy metal sound. Did something change that made it heavier or is it just that people who were into heavier music were attracted to it? Robby Krieger from the Doors had a very nice guitar tone on most of their songs aside from Peace Frog and he played an SG.
