Running external 2560x1080 display off of Pro 5th Gen.

Does anyone know if you need a doc or the right cable would work? I am currently using the amazon basics MiniDisp to HDMI and it does not seem to support the resolution. It may also be a surface issue but all the drivers are up to date. So I am basically wondering if I can save money with a new cord or have to spend money on the doc.
