Broken shovel question

Hello Reddit, I have a question about broken shovel. I'm now in the boss rush, trying to unlock the forgotten but I don't know, whether it is possible to exchange broken shovel for an other active item, will it still count afterwards or do i have to stick with those stomps throughout the boss rush? :)
