Returning from a hiatus. What's up with the audio?

The last I played was probably like 2015.

Everything is really hard to hear, like it's muffled or muted. I get that they straight-up changed the sounds for a lot of guns, but footsteps and gunfire sound far away even when they're close and it's hard to discern their origin in relation to my position. I turned up the volume, but then my own footsteps and gunfire are too loud. Is there a new setting I should look out for or something, or is that just how it is now? Anyone else have a hard time adjusting? Hoping there's something I can do about it and it's not just that I hate the new sounds.
