why is this game so difficult

i swear its almost impossible to beat some of the later worlds without sinking thousands of coins in powerups and etc, they just send way to many zombies at the same time and your plants can barely keep up with it. is my only option to go back and grind for coins and seed packets or is there some hidden difficulty switch to make the game a bit more fair.
