"I'd like to speak with my lawer" Does everyone but me have one?

Ok, so I'm a fairly straight shooter, never been in trouble with the law in any way. But.....if I ever was, and I'm being accused of something, I know I shouldn't say anything without a lawer present. I always see in movies where the accused is all like "I'd like to see my lawyer" and all that. Am I super out of the loop? Does everyone else have someone to call? It would take me quite a while to research and find one. Does the court automatically give you a public defendant?

Again, this is purely hypothetical. I just thought it might be a good idea to be prepared.
