History of Consecutive Undefeated Seasons
With UCF on the cusp of a second consecutive season I looked back on the teams that have done it in the past.
In the AP era (since 1936) only eight teams have gone undefeated and untied in back to back seasons:
- Minnesota------------------------1940-1941 (18 consecutive wins, NC: 1940, 1941)
- Army--------------------------------1944-1945 (36 consecutive wins, NC: 1944, 1945)
- Michigan--------------------------1947-1948 (25 consecutive wins, NC: 1947, 1948)
- Michigan State-----------------1951-1952 (28 consecutive wins, NC: 1951, 1952)
- Oklahoma------------------------1954-1956 (47 consecutive wins, NC: 1955, 1956)
- Penn State-----------------------1968-1969 (31 consecutive wins, NC: N/A)
- Toledo-----------------------------1969-1971 (35 consecutive wins, NC: N/A)
- Nebraska-------------------------1994-1995 (26 consecutive wins, NC: 1994, 1995)
Of all of these teams only Penn State and Toledo went undefeated in consecutive seasons without winning a National Championship in either season. Toledo's highest ranking during their undefeated run was 12 in 1970. Penn State reached number 2 in 1969. Oklahoma is the only team to not win the National Championship in one of their undefeated seasons but win in the other. If UCF were to win the Fiesta Bowl they would join this list with 26 consecutive wins and a National Championship (possibly two).
