Unity & Rick's relationship (Rick&Morty)
I was just watching this particular episode of Rick and Morty and this strange idea just hit me. Unity is an organism that has the power to enslave huge populations of people and can actually speak through them, changing into whatever person she wants to. That kind of reminded me of borderline lack of self and manipulation.
Their whole relationship really only involved her (Unity) changing into whatever person Rick wanted to fullfill his fantasies and trying desperately to make his wildest dreams come true. That reminded me of the evaluation/infatuation phaze of borderline relationships, where you morph into the other person and try to satisfy him like no other.
Another thing is, Unity likes hanging out with Rick so much that she loses herself with him. She ends up losing her power over the population she enslaved because of her partying with him. For a lot of us I think it's difficult trying to balance a romantic relationship with our daily occupations.
Last thing to note is the letter that Unity left Rick:
"Rick, forgive me for doing this in notes; I’m not strong enough to do it in persons.
I realize now that I’m attracted to you for the same reason I can’t be with you: you can’t change. (You start up loving someone viewing them as perfect and end up devaluing them because they cant change the same values you once loved about them)
And I have no problem with that, but it clearly means I have a problem with myself. (Changing someone is not loving them. Unity realizes the problem and the answer lies within her)
I’m sure there’s no perfect version of me. I’m sure I’ll just unify species after species and never really be complete. ("I'm sure I'll just jump from relationship to relationship trying to enslave and manipulate and change people, never being truky happy)
But I know how it goes with us. I lose who I am and become part of you. Because in a strange way, you’re better at what I do without even trying. (That especially shows typical borderlime enmeshment into the other, veing attached to your fp's hip)
Yours, and nobody else’s, Unity"
Maybe its just another toxic codependent relationship, but to me it fits especially into the usual, karmic borderline textbook relationship. What do you think?
