[The Mummy] Why didn't the Medjai kill & cremate the surviving Americans to prevent Imhotep from absorbing them?

You would assume that Imhotep would never reach full power if he didn't have the 'parts' to absorb, & the Medjai explicitly stated that they were willing to kill innocent people to prevent the high priest from ever reaching power again.
