Question about SLAP tear recovery time in right shoulder

20yrs old, Male, 5'9 160, White, Over a year. About a year ago I began to notice my shoulder felt very weak and it clicked and felt unstable whenever I lifted weights or did any serious physical activity. I went to physical therapy two different times for a combined 3 months with no results. Today I got my MRI results back and my doctor informed me I have a SLAP tear in my right shoulder. For this upcoming semester I am looking to pledge a fraternity which would require me to do very strenuous physical activity. I have about a month of Christmas break and I've been given the option of having the surgery then or waiting until the end of the year. Would my shoulder be the same, better, or worse in terms of strength and stability a month following the surgery? What is the usual timeline for recovery with this sort of injury? Can I tough it out and try and so push-ups and whatever else is required of me if I support it with physical therapy on off days? I was informed they won't know the full severity until I get an arthroscopy during the surgery.
