Am I directed to pings or the address?

Someone royally screwed up their ping placement tonight, and lyft sent me to the ping as opposed to the address. I was a good several blocks away from where they were.

I'm a newbie so maybe a dumb question, but is this common?

Edit: sorry if not clear, but by ping, I mean the marker/needle they place on the app
