Help with game from my childhood.

Platform: PS1, PS2, or Dreamcast. I think it was one of these platforms I am not positive but 90% sure.

Estimated year of release: between 1998 - 2005. Again not positive on the release but I would say I'm 90% sure it was released in this time frame.

Graphics: Very realistic for the time it was released. It was a dark gloomy game from what I remember was really meant to scare you.

Genre: It was an action horror game.

Notable characters: This is basically the only part I really remember. In one part of the game you are in an old abandoned town and you trigger a cut scene where a woman is standing in front of you and she starts telling a story about a young kid (I can't remember his name) this kid was bullied and mistreated and eventually he died (pretty sure from freezing to death) when this cut scene ends the boy comes back as this mutant creature thing and it becomes a boss battle.

Notable game play mechanics: The biggest gaming mechanic that I remember is you would be running down a path to move on to the next area and you would have buttons pop up on your screen (like X or A) and you would have to hit the button within a certain time frame or something would happen to your character. The best example I can give for this is one time you are running along the side of a mountain or hill and the button pops on your screen and if you failed to hit the button in time you would fall off the side of the hill and would have to fight a bunch of monsters ( I want to say they were these little plant monsters but again not positive).

This is all I truly remember about the game. I hope that you guys are able to help me I've been googling this information for the last 3 hours now and it is slowly driving me insane. I appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thank you
