Ach-To, the first Jedi Temple, "Why Death-Stars?"- A bad theory that will annoy you probably.

Have we ever received an in-movie explanation as to why building giant death-lasers out of Kyber crystals are so important to powerful dark side users, i.e. Palps and Snoke? A small blurb on the official SW website and "database" says something to the effect:

"ancient sith used kyber crystals to create superweapons"

but do we really have an idea, aside from the practical purpose of having a super weapon to eliminate Jedi, the Galactic Republic etc., why this design is so appealing to these guys? Hang tight for a minute...

Ach-To and The First Jedi Temple

I take Luke for his word that he believes the hubris of the Jedi, their proprietary notions of lightness and the force are the things failed him in preventing Ben's fall to the dark, and this serves as the basis for his self-imposed exile. That's fine, even Yoda went into exile after Sidious destroyed his order of Jedi and turned the chosen one to the dark.

One thing that is slightly incongruous, however, is a guy who decides the ideology he once espoused should go away and die is that he goes searching after the origins of said ideology that he blames for the destruction of his new generation of Jedi and creating another Vader- which leads me to think its inclusion in the story has to be something.

Perhaps he didn't intend for it to be permanent, if so he did a poor job hiding he was going if "those who knew him best" believed in he went searching for the first temple and essentially an old preacher (Lor San Tekka) had part of a road map to find him. What is the significance of the first Jedi temple? Why go there? Why does REY see the "island" in the interrogation scene with Kylo despite growing up on Jakku?

Theory

Ach-To, the supposed birthplace of the Jedi, and perhaps the starting point of where the philosophical light/dark schism occurred, is the proto-superweapon developed by whatever incipient force-users or "prime Jedi" that began there. I think it adds more gravity to Luke's actions if he didn't intend to go away forever initially, let's say he generically went "searching for answers" or "the ancient Jedi texts" and found the ancient Jedi have the same solution the Sith do (maybe that's where they got the idea!) to the light/dark dichotomy in that both camps believe one side must win out versus the other instead of finding a balance between the two.

Perhaps this is why Luke was able to project himself across the galaxy from that meditation spot. Perhaps this is why he cut himself off from the force which to me seemed like a precautionary measure in hopes that he (and Ach-To) wouldn't be found by Ben/Snoke, perhaps why he doesn't seem real concerned over Snoke/Ben and is content to die there protecting it. Maybe it's another reason Luke is reticent to train Rey because while strong with the force, she is imbalanced between the light and the dark and perhaps Ach-To's function depends on the intent of the force-user using it.

Maybe Rey only started seeing the island after the force vision from touching the blue saber. There was an old rumor/leak that circulated in 2013-2014 (around the same time as the mizzlewump leaks which turned out pretty accurate looking in hindsight) that part of Luke's exile was that he was guarding a tomb or weapon that the BLUE SABER was the key to opening, which would explain neatly a lot of his actions we see in TLJ and fill the vacuum of the big bad in the case a.) Luke is guarding Big Bad's tomb or b.) Luke is guarding a weapon against falling into the wrong hands.

Anyways there's my bad theory that will probably annoy you.
