Incident regarding fraudulent activity against a family member.

Hi, thanks for reading, any help would be greatly appreciated. This happened in NSW.

Ill keep it short. My friends' son decided to take out thousands in payday loans in his fathers name. The father found out about 2 weeks ago, he's a kind person, so its a nightmare of a situation. The son is in his mid twenties and has a record.

He tried to get his son to organise to pay it off, the son agreed to terms. But now his son hasn't contacted in a few days and it appears the father is going to be stuck paying off the loans If he doesn't report it. He has a family to support and its going to make living very uncomfortable if he has to fork out the cash.

If the father goes to the police station now to report it is he an accessory after the fact? The father has never been in trouble with the police in his life.

What are the ramifications of not reporting it straight away?

Any other legal advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again
