Which direction does the ribbon pull from?

Both of my typewriters had ribbons spooled about halfway when I received them, and I don't know which way to wind the ribbon to have it go continuously. On the one I've used more, where the ribbon that came with it actually broke because I clearly hadn't wound it correctly, I was constantly getting dry stretches on the ribbon where I'd already typed but had started pulling the ribbon from the wrong direction.
