Traffic Anamolies

Over the course of the last couple of days, I've noticed a big influx of traffic on my site, but something doesn't feel right about it. For starters, via GA, it's doubling, nearly tripling the site stats daily from the internal Jetpack site stats, even though they, for a long time, were pretty close. Additionally, despite pageviews tracking both on Adsense and Analytics, we don't really have the ad revenue that would reflect the volume of traffic we've received. My initial thought was perhaps it was just a bump in the percentage of traffic using ad block, but that has hovered about the same as previous months' data based on active view percentages. User data is showing huge bumps up in average pages per session and time on site. Ever just get that feeling something isn't adding up? I've got it wildly right now about the stats GA is showing, a crucial tool for how we pay our writers. Perhaps I'm a pessimist, but what can I do to verify the legitimacy of these stats?

I've already got filters, albeit a bit older, that are meant to keep referrer spam and web crawl bots.

Meanwhile no settings change has been made either within Analytics or on our website in regards to the tracking code and parameters.

What can I do to check in on this?

I actually went through a Google support chat and they didn't see anything flag worthy. But how can I be getting so much more traffic, showcasing standout engagement metrics, and not be making hardly any money on those impressions?

Edit: To add to this, all of my content on the Google report is showing huge jumps in pages/session. From somewhere under 2 to over 5 in the course of two days. And while watching real time stats, I watched 4 active users generate 42 pageviews without actually leaving the active pages they were reportedly in. My real time stats history indicates large spikes in pageviews coming some 10 minutes or so apart.
