Dog Ear revision— what’s it like?

SurgeryTalk

I am looking into having a revision done with Dr. Mosser for two small dog ears I have. I was wondering if anyone had experience having this revision, what’s the recovery like, pain level (everyone’s different though so I’ll keep that in mind). Thank you!

A warning about my experience: I think I just somehow had the opposite experience that most people seem to have with it, post the revision. I asked basically the same thing as you, and everyone assured me it was fine, and recovery was fine, and you bounce back right away, with people saying they were able to drive home, able to go to work the next morning, etc. That's not at all what happened for me lol. But I'll share what it was like to get the revision first.

I'm not sure how Mosser does his dog ear revisions, so this could be totally different from how he'll do things, but since he's a pretty popular surgeon I'm sure there will be others here who have direct experience with him and revisions. For my revision I just went to my surgeons office (and not to the surgery center I had had top surgery at), and we did the revisions in a patient room at his practice offices. I didn't have anesthesia, but did have a bunch of local numbing shots on each side. The first like two shots would hurt pretty badly, but these shots don't last long, and I had had them before when getting drains out so I kinda knew what to expect pain wise from them. After that the numbness kicked in, and I didn't feel the pain from the other shots. What he did for dog ears was basically liposuction to get extra fat out of the sides. You know those bigger size straws used for like bubble tea or fraps at some places? The tube that went in me looked a little like that, but of course kinda longer than a straw lol. He jokingly told me not to look at it when he was setting it up to put it in me, and I didn't, but I caught glimpses of it here and there throughout the process. He made a small incision on the first side, did what he needed to do with the lipo, then did the same on the other side. During the lipo there wasn't really any pain, but I could feel the tube like pushing against my ribs inside me. I don't know if it was actually hitting the bones or not, but that's what it kinda felt like, and it was just a very unsettling feeling to feel something scraping your skeleton lmao. This just made me super uncomfortable, and at one point the nurse asked if I was ok, and since it wasn't really hurting I just said I was, and she asked if I was sure, then turned to the surgeon and was like "he looks like he wants to punch you right now" lol. I love my surgeon, but like she wasn't really wrong lol. When he got to the other side of me to do the same thing, about halfway through, or maybe closer to the end of it I don't remember exactly, it started to hurt a little because the numbing was starting to wear off. I've learned from countless dental procedures to speak up if the numbing starts to wear off lol, so I let him know and he asked if it was too bad, or may have even asked me to rate it on a 1-10 scale. It wasn't too bad, and was tolerable, so I told him so, and he said he was almost done, but to let him know if it started to hurt worse and he'd give another shot. I don't remember if I needed another shot, but I don't think I did. He stitched each side up as he was done with them, put some dressings on them, and basically sent me on my way. The whole thing took maybe like 45mins or an hour longer than he had originally proposed it would take.

He had told me I could go to work the next day, but I had taken the next day off, as I had never had anything like this done and I was just unsure of what to expect. Later that day, and over the next few days, I continued to be in a bit too much pain than what i could really tolerate, and the bruising was absolutely wild. One side wouldn't stop bleeding for a bit, but then after about a day or a day and a half it finally did stop. I was in more pain post revision than I had been in post the actual top surgery itself, and when I went to go take some of the prescription pain meds I had left over form top surgery I noticed I had actually not even used them for top surgery, and I had all of them left. The bruising was also way more worse than it was with the initial surgery. I continued to feel pretty moody and shitty for the next few days, and wound up taking another 2-3 days off of work, and telling them I couldn't do any heavy lifting for about a week when I did go back just in case.

At the time I was kinda moody afterwards, and couldn't really see any difference from when I had some small dog ears before the revision, and was a bit grumpy and was feeling a little regretful, and wondering if the revision had actually even done anything. But I guess I was still just swollen a bunch then or something, because now a year later I can definitely see a difference between how my sides look now compared to what they looked like before the revision.
