FPS Benchmarks Before & After Upgrading CPU & Mobo

TECHNICAL

Just this last week, I upgraded my CPU and Motherboard, and I wanted to see what kind of difference it would make in Star Citizen.Ram, SSD, and GPU all stayed the same.

Old Setup

Intel i7-6700k @ 4ghz

Asrock Fatal1ty z170 K6 Gaming

MSI 1070ti running at stock speeds

G.Skill Ripjaw 4 DDR4 @ 2400 (32gigs)

Samsung EVO 840 SSD (SC and Win10 only)

New Setup

Intel i7-8086K @ 5ghz (it's a better binned 8700k, no difference otherwise)

EVGA Z370 Classified K

MSI 1070ti running at stock speeds

G.Skill Ripjaw 4 DDR4 @ 2400 (32gigs)

EVO 840 SSD (SC and Win10 only)

For testing, I fired up FRAPS, and ran a benchmark while QTing from Port Olisar to Hurston's Orbit, spending most of the time in Director Mode (F4), just to have more geometry on the screen. I saved the info in excel and made a quick reference chart.

You'll notice that I went quite a bit longer time after the change, I wanted to walk around Hurston and see what I'd get, so the benchmarks aren't EXACTLY 1:1, but the chart still gives a pretty good comparison.

There is 1 drop to zero frames during each benchmark. Those are times I was forced to Alt-tab briefly, sadly, couldn't be helped, but since it happened each time, it should still be a decent comparison.

Of course, but the question is How Much better is it. Adding 2 cores and 1ghz, and all.

The improvement of course depends what you leapfrog from. For me moving from a 4 core HT 4790k to an 8 core 9900k was massive. Worlds apart in minimum frames, average frames, 1% and 0.1% general stutter and minimum frame rates

Indeed. I jumped from an i7-3770 to a Ryzen 7 2700x (and faster RAM) and the difference was massive.

It's night and day isn't it. I had gotten used to stutter and frame drops and fps in the 40, now ave fps is around 100. 60 at Lorville. it feels like completely different game, it's not punishing to log in. I feel spoiled lol.

Can't wait to see the improvements next year when I upgrade from a i5-6600k to a Ryzen R5 3600x

just go ahead and save up for the speculated 3850x :D, I bought a 6600k and I regret not buying the best at the time even though I had the money to do it so from here on its high end for me

Thanks for this chart!

It reaffirms why I’m waiting for PCIe v 5.0 standards coming 2019 before upgrading my PC hardware

I just bought the: Samsung 970 EVO 250GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7E250BW) It seems on that chart, it will be just a tiny bit faster than this...or is it that much faster and i shoulda return it?

Ya another solid metric tracker is

robertsspaceindustries.com/telemetry

where you can see how different hardware components effect FPS in Star Citizen

Hope that helps you!

thx, but i want to know if i should wait for the v5.0 pcie or just keep my evo 970 Pcie

If you’re throwing away your “old rig”, lemme know.

I might do something with it. If it falls through I'll hollar at you.

Yeh fuck that old hardware you should just give it to me or throw it away or give it to me or something

Positively ancient. Good thing kind people like us will take care of rubbish for free.

Lemme guess, at time 883 you went to either Lorville or Levski?

LongscopeOPStreamer, Golden Ticket•

Lol, yep. :)
I landed at Lorville, then walked around a bit.
