Object behavior after Boolean subtract top operation.

It seems that when I subtract a smaller shape from the interior of a larger, even though the cutout appears, it becomes some kind of compound object, with both shapes being independently selectable. Is this expected behavior? It intuitively seems that the new shapes should behave as a single shape.
