Winter Ball Practice

Here it was, the final week of the term. But for many students, the worry extended past the classroom, the weekdays, and into the weekend. Saturday to be specific. For the annual Winter Ball, because not even Hogwarts can avoid awkward high school dances.

As if students didn’t have enough to worry about with trying to finish the term on a good note. Now they had to worry about what to wear, finding a date, and not looking like a complete idiot on the dance floor.

Victor, who didn’t currently have a class schedule until the new term volunteered his time to help educate the students in a few formal dances. Now, he couldn’t prevent students from breaking out the robot, the moon walk, or some other form of awkward movements, but he could show them what he knew in regards of partner dances.

The great hall had been decorated earlier in the week, and tonight the tables had been pushed aside to accommodate for dance practice for those who wanted to attend.

“Good evening ladies and gentleman!” Victor finally started as students began to shuffle into the great hall. “Many of you don’t know me yet. I’m Professor Montgomery and I will be teaching Muggle Studies next term.”

He had been nervous before he started, but public speaking had always come naturally to him. And it felt nice to actually be instructing students for a change.

“We have a little less than a week left in the term, and Saturday is the Winter Ball.” That received a few groans from students. “So tonight I will be showing you all a few dances so you can represent your houses and have a good time.”

Victor proceeded to find a volunteer, a Seventh Year boy who was goofing off in the back. Red-faced, he was pulled into the center of the dance floor where Victor proceeded to demonstrate the waltz.

After that, Victor found a partner who actually wanted to volunteer and demonstrated a few more dances including: the foxtrot, the salsa, and a few others. This took some time, but when he was finally done he dismissed everyone to do their own thing.

Roleplay

Students had a few options on how to spend their evening:

• Hang around the snack table and mingle

• Mad scramble to find a last minute date

• Partner up and practice dances

• Seek Victor out for help
