Has anyone gone to the hospital for mental health services? What was it like?

I was really close to suicide a while ago but managed to fight back the urge. An officer told me that if they took me to the hospital there was an inpatient program for people with mental health issues. I wanted to go but wasn't sure how long I would be kept there. Long enough to miss out on work when it starts back up in January? Long enough to not be able to make my rent and car payments? I found one website that says they keep you for a couple months at least but idk if that's for all cases. Does anybody have any experience with this and did the program help you at all? I'm pretty stable now but I feel I could benefit from something like this. Thanks.
