What do you think about soldiers from your country who voluntary signed up for wars abroad (i.e. in Afghanistan, Iraq, ect)?

If the title is not clear, it's no secret that many European countries participate in wars abroad, and, as I assume, soldiers who go there weren't forced to do so, but instead were willing themselves to see real war.

What do you think of these people? Are they heroes or devils? What is possible motivation behind them going to war? Do you think it's fair to say that they just wanted to kill other people?
