Is it safe to share storage via NFS from the Proxmox host?

Hi guys,

I have a ZFS pool, and I enjoy all the services what ZFS can offer.

Usually, I do allocate some disk space to each VM, and it is just fine but that way I had a lot of unused but allocated disk space "hanging".

Some of my VMs would run services like a media server what I can not estimate how much storage it needs - it would be nice not to allocate anything but be available as much as necessary.

I thought that maybe I create an extra ZFS pool for each mount like this and share them via NFS. What I hope from this that I can use ZFS services and also I use only what I need.

  • Can it cause any trouble that any file can land on the Proxmox host server filesystem?
  • If I do not use the share elsewhere, can I consider it a safe and separated environment for different projects? I mean if each project has its own ZFS pool and a separated, IP/VLAN restricted NFS share?
