Activation key troubleshooting

Trying to move a windows 10 Home x64 retail key from my old laptop to my desktop, also windows 10 home x64. The laptop had been upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10. I keep getting error code 0x80041014 when entering the key into the desktop. It's already been uninstalled from the laptop, it says it's not activated and has no key. I've done some googleing, and tried everything short of a fresh install or buying another key (which I really would rather not do). Any suggestions/help is much appreciated.

Edit: both are connected to the internet

Edit 2: Contacted customer support, they said because it was upgraded for free from 8 to 10, that it was no longer transferrable. Oh well
