PSA:Don't up****. Lily Poisoning

Anyway this is probably common knowledge but I feel like an idiot right now.

The Lily Flower, multiple types, even minimal amounts of exposure, can be deadly to cats.

NIH reports fatal exposure with part of a petal or two leaves; and there are anecdotal reports of toxicity from grooming pollen off fur from bouquets and drinking water from a vase. The toxin is not well understood but appears to be water soluble so will start absorbing as soon as it touches mucous membranes. It causes renal failure which is invariably fatal if untreated. I read a few studies off PubMed which showed a 95-100% Survival rate if treated appropriately, so that's good.

Recommended tx at this time includes activated charcoal, attempted emesis induction (difficult in cats, didn't work for mine at home or with meds in the ER), and IV Fluids x 48-72 hours.

So, my cat is in the hospital because I was too stupid to do my research before letting her out.

A have a couple of indoors cats and just finished an addition to my home to screen in the patio; since it was a beautiful morning I thought she could enjoy it; she was having a blast walking around and decided to chew off the tip of a leaf of an Asiatic lily bulb I was growing; so I just thought id google it and see if it was toxic. Well - it is - very. And there is no clear answer on how much is too much. So after torturing my poor cat to try and induce vomiting at home, I took her to the hospital I trust and now she's getting IV fluids.

I feel so bad to put her through all this but would feel worse if she got sick and died because I didn't act.
Apparently if you act within 18 hours the chances of a good outcome are high.

I just wanted to pass this along to anyone who didn't obviously know about it like I did not.

Take care of your pets this holiday, and I wish the best for you and yours.

Please no up***** IDGAF about Karma.
