Ask before gifting someone a ThinkPad

Regarding Christmas and all, you should ask if someone would like a new laptop before buying one as a gift.

Last year, I avoided seeming ungrateful to a relative who wanted to gift me a new macbook because thankfully, she asked if I was content with the X62 ThinkPad I was using at the time. So I want to give a word of caution that you shouldn't gift someone a new laptop just because that someone lugs around an old laptop (especially a well-worn/classic ThinkPad). Same goes for buying hobby-related items, unless you know more about that hobby than the recipient.
