Question about Summoner

I've been trying to decide between SMN and BLM to graduate to from red mage. I prefer more mobile classes, so I'm leaning on summoner. Only problem is, I hate pet management. I don't mind hitting a button to make your pet cast, but micromanaging pet movement sucks. How bad is the pet ui in regards to aoe? Will I have to keep moving it to keep it alive, or can it just ignore most aoe?
