How do historians analyze the causes of the Greek civil war?

Was the point of the Americans and British to stop communism from spreading throughout Europe or were their intentions to maintain a stable ally in the Mediterranean or both? How important was Greece to the USSR, and was the catalyst for the war from within greece or was it international?
