Mom, I'm so sorry and I love you.
I just want to start this out by making it clear that I am so sorry to my mom because I know she’ll blame herself for this but this is entirely of my own doing. I made the choice to come out here and it was my choice to leave the cabin.
This all started with the passing of my father. We weren’t that close since he was never in my life really. The best I can say about him was he never missed a child support payment. Anyway, my father left me an old cabin since it had been passed down throughout the family.
My mom and I looked up the cabin on google earth and man, this place actually looked nice. It wasn’t the evil dead murder cabin I expected, but it wasn’t exactly the best looking cabin in the world either. The place looked like it was made in the ’60s and renovated in the ’80s. Plus it was on the lakeside that seemed almost too good to be true. My mom then brought up the fact that this place could be renovated into a great Air B&B for some extra income.
My mom thought I should go alone since I just turned 18 and she couldn’t go because of her job. Also, who was I to be against some time alone in a nice cabin? Maybe I could join tinder and get some dates up there. Little did I know none of this would be happening.
After a few months of planning, I finally set out to the cabin with my Rush mix playing every mile I was driving. My first ‘weird’ experience that threw me off was at the gas station just outside of town. My truck was low and I needed to fill up a few jerrycans for the generator that runs the floodlights around the cabin, that’s when the woman came up to me.
“Hello, sir.” The woman said to me with a soft smile, I turned around and smiled back her while I continued to fill up my truck. “I couldn’t help but notice that I’ve never seen you around here before.” She said to me before I nodded my head again. “Yes ma’am, I’m just coming up here to work on a cabin of mine.” I wanted to get her to leave, but then again, I also didn’t want to come as an asshole. “Oh well, that’s sweet. You must be Turner’s son.” She replied sweetly to me.
I was shocked, her saying my father’s last name was like a bullet through my heart. “Uh… yeah, I am. Did you know him?” “Of course. Everyone knows your dad around here.” Just to reiterate, I had no idea anything about my dad’s life. “Well, that’s news to me. I take it he talked about me a lot.” The old lady nodded her head to what I just said. “Of course, you have no idea how beautiful it is up here. You’ll love living up here.” She smiled again and placed her hand on my shoulder.
I then shook my head “Actually, I’m not moving up here. I’m renovating the house and turning it into an Air B&B.” The old lady then frowned in what looked like disapproval. “Oh no, you can’t do that. The onlookers won’t like that.”
“The onlookers…?” I asked as I turned around to place the cap back on my truck’s fuel tank “What does that mean?”
I turned around and she was gone.
I swiped my debit card in the machine and I drove off. The lady’s whole look and personality just creeped me out, not to mention that she just vanished. At this point, I swear to god I was in a Stephen King novel. Who the hell were the onlookers? What the hell did my father do around here? I had a million questions in my mind until I drove up to the cabin and saw how beautiful it was.
This place was like a relic from the ‘80s and just completely floored me. The cabin had a lot of windows and a great wooden deck. To the right, there was a small little shack that was probably used for storage. I then got out of my truck with my backpack and walked up to the door. I looked around the surroundings and it seemed like time stood still. A heavy breeze flowed through the trees and rusted the leaves on the forest bed while the soft sound of water crashing against the rocky shore of the lake. It seemed like everything around me was apart of a whole being that lived and breathed.
I then opened the door to the cabin and was again, blown away by the beauty of this place. It was like walking into Ferris Buller’s house or something, a true relic of the past. I set my backpack down on the couch, took off my jacket, and started searching around the house. It was a one-story with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, all facing the lake.
After searching around, I thought it would be a good idea to call my mom. So I pulled out my phone and saw that I had no service so I decided to use the landline, which was disconnected. It was getting dark and I was pretty exhausted from the ride in, so I decided it would be a good idea to just relax so I can get a head start for the next day of renovating.
I snuck a couple of beers from my mom’s stash (I’m really sorry mom, but it’s not my main problem right now) and decided to crack one open while watching my comfort food of media, the office, that I had downloaded on my phone before I lost service. And then, before I knew it, I passed out on the couch.
I woke up suddenly at about 2:30 AM to a huge bang that hit the house. I quickly got up and started looking out of the windows, finding nothing that would have made the sound. I look at the front door and saw an orange light flickering. I grabbed a knife from the kitchen and slowly unlocked the door, opening it.
Jesus Christ, my car was on fire.
I rushed back into the house and grabbed a bucket, sprinting out to the lake and filling it up with water. I then ran back to the truck and started to put out the fire. Rinse and repeat these motions for half an hour and the flames were finally extinguished. I slowly shuffled my way over to the steps of the cabin and sit down, starting to cry profusely.
I was alone in a town I was not familiar to me, in a house that I had never been in before, and sitting in front of my only way out of both of those situations. And that’s when I realized, everything was silent.
There was no wind rustling the leaves around, there was no sound of the water crashing against the rocks, and there was no sound of any bug or animal in the woods.
I then felt a huge sense of dread come over me as if I was being watched by something in the darkness surrounding me. I started to look around since my paranoia was going up exponentially. The feeling was getting more and more strong as I felt a huge knot in my stomach start to form.
And then I heard a snap of someone or something walking on a twig in the forest.
I immediately looked up at my surroundings to see if anything was there as I stood, slowly backing up towards the door. Right as I touched the handle I heard as if someone was whispering into my ear.
“We don’t want you here.”
I opened the door and rushed inside as quickly as I could before barricading the front door. Although in hindsight, it probably did nothing because of all the windows in that house. If they wanted to get in, then they could have easily.
I stayed up until sunlight, hiding in a closet with a kitchen knife. I had no way of contacting anyone that could help and the closest thing that I knew of was a gas station a few miles away. I walked around the house for anything to protect myself with, finding no avail to my situation.
I checked the time and it was around 9:00 AM, probably safe enough to go out and check my surroundings. I also knew this was probably my only attempt to make it out of here alive. So I grabbed my backpack, my phone, the kitchen knife I was using a few hours ago and went outside.
All the normal sounds were back as I looked at my now totaled truck before looking over at the shed. I walk over and unlock the door to find the greatest thing I could find in my predicament.
A hunters rifle and a box full of ammo.
I grabbed the rifle and stuffed some of the ammo in my pockets while dumping the rest into my backpack. I then started my walk down the winding road I came down, hoping to find safety before night.
I’ll skip over the hours of walking but it didn’t work out. I had been walking for 10 and a half hours and the sun had almost set. I knew my time was running out so I loaded the rifle, being extra cautious about my surroundings.
An hour passed as it was now dark but I knew I was getting close to the gas station. Crickets could be heard chirping while the sound of my shoes grinding against gravel nearly drowned out most of the noises I heard.
And then there was complete silence.
The same sense of dread was back as I turned off the safety on the rifle, the same knot forming in my stomach. I then continued to walk down the road, starting to see the lights of the gas station in the distance.
That’s when I saw them.
The moment I let out a sigh of relief, I heard a snap of a twig from behind me. I turned around quickly to find what looked like a tall stretched out human that was extremely white. I gasped before realizing I was looking at its chest, the thing was easily 15 feet tall. I started sprinting towards the gas station before I realized more of them started coming out of the woods.
I continued to run as fast as I could before one of them picked me up by the backpack while screaming loudly. The thing turned me around to face it, letting me get a good look at its face. Its eyes were like looking into black holes. It had and two small holes for a nose and then it opened it’s mouth to show lines of razor-sharp teeth. I recognized it was about to take a bite of me as the others surrounded us.
Then I shot the creature in its face.
I blew a hole right through its head before I heard ear-piercing screeching from the others as it dropped to the ground dead. The thing still had my backpack tight in its grip as I started running with just the rifle towards the gas station while the others gathered around the dead body.
I rushed into the gas station and closed the doors, barricading them with shelves or whatever I could find. I was panting as I gathered my thoughts on what the hell just happened.
I have about five bullets left, my phone that has about 30% left (9% now), and a hunting rifle.
I am writing this in my notes and hoping somebody finds this message because I am completely surrounded by these things. I do not have enough bullets to kill all of them. I have to go through an entire night here (It’s about 9:47 PM) and they will get in.
I want this nightmare to end. I don’t want to die. I want my mom.
