Do dogs get cold sores or canker sores?

I noticed my 2 y/o male Deerhound has a few spots on his lips that look like a human canker sore or cold sore. I'm not terribly worried about it because it doesn't seem to bother him, and I'll ask the vet next time we go in, but just curious if dogs get mouth sores similar to humans?
